Our day at the St. George Reef Lightouse
At the head of the Simpson - Reed Grove Trail
An ancient forest where 1,000 year old redwoods form a towering canopy over a mixture of hardwood trees, shrubs, and ferns. Every old-growth forest has its own distinctive characteristics. This grove includes a lush stream corridor where fallen trees lie randomly in the water, forming staircases and pools that support fish and insects. Other fallen giants nurse new life on the forest floor as hemlock trees, huckleberries, and ferns sprout among their decaying trunks and branches.
The damp shade of the forest creates ideal conditions for red-legged frogs, rough-skinned newts, and other amphibians that depend on the trees to provide moisture through the dry summer, assuring a home for a class of animals that are in decline.

During high tide the path to Battery Point Lighthouse is under water. If you look to the left side of the island, you will see the path disappear into the water.
Once the tide drops, our brave travelers walk the rocky path to Battery Point Lighthouse

Also known as the Trinidad Memorial Lighthouse
This Cupola came from the top of the Humboldt harbor Lighthouse that was located at the North Spit of Humboldt Bay. The Cupola vented heat from the beacon so the lantern room windows would not cover with condensation. The lighthouse was demolished in 1933. In 1987, some 54 years later, the cast iron cupola was found in the sand.

The Oakland Harbor Lighthouse, which is now a restaurant called Quinn's Lighthouse, no longer serves as an active aid to navigation...but they can still stamp your passport!
