Itinerary
Beginning and ending in our Nation’s Capitol, the 2011 Chesapeake Bay tour provides participants with a wonderful journey through three states while viewing thirty-three lighthouses from the land and water, two lightships and two life saving stations. Along the way we will also take time to tour the U.S. Naval Academy, several museums and historical ships. Other activities include shopping at Harbor Place in Baltimore Harbor, strolling the boardwalk in Ocean City and a chance to catch a glimpse of the wild ponies of Chincoteague.
The Chesapeake Bay tour begins in Washington, DC where we will hold our welcome dinner at the hotel. Our first lighthouses will be those at Jones Point and Fort Washington. We will then head down the Solomons Peninsula toward the point where the Patuxent River meets the Chesapeake Bay and stop at the Piney Point and Point Lookout Lighthouses. This will be followed by a tour of the Calvert
Maritime Museum, home to the Drum Point screwpile lighthouse. We will spend the night in Solomons and travel the next morning to the nearby Cove Point Lighthouse for a tour. Our next destination will be Annapolis for a boat tour out to Sandy Point Shoal, Baltimore Harbor and Bloody Point Bar. A unique opportunity will also be provided at Thomas Point Shoal where we will tour one of only two cottage-style screwpile lighthouses still in its original location. Later in the day our travels will take us to the United States Navy Academy for a walking tour before we spend the night in Annapolis. Baltimore’s Inner Harbor is our first destination the next day where we will climb aboard the Chesapeake Lightship and tour the Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse. Additional time will be provided here for you to wander through the shops at Harbor Place or take additional tours of the USS Constellation, submarine USS Torsk or USCG Cutter Taney. Early in the afternoon we journey back on the water to view the four Craighill Channel lights and the Pooles Island Lighthouse. Our evening and night will be spent near Baltimore.
After visiting the Concord Point and Turkey Point lighthouses the following day, we will venture into Delaware and make stops at the rear range lights at Bellevue, Liston and Reedy Island. Arriving in Lewes, our second lightship of the tour will be the Overfalls, after which a short boat ride will take us to the Delaware Breakwater and Harbor of Refuge Lighthouses. We will spend the night in Lewes. Our last Delaware lighthouse, Fenwick Island, is so close to the Maryland border that just outside the lighthouse you can stand in both states at the same time! A short break from lighthouses will follow with stops at the historic Indian River Life-Saving Station and Ocean City Boardwalk where you can wander through the funky shops or forget about fat grams and calories and enjoy some of Thrasher’s famous french fries! Leaving Maryland behind, our adventure continues as we visit the iconic Assateague Lighthouse in Virginia. While in the area we hopefully will be able to see some of the famous wild ponies of Chincoteague Island. Our final tour day will be highlighted by a boat cruise past Solomon’s Lump, Smith Point, Point No Point, Hooper Island and Sharp’s Island Lighthouses. We will disembark the boat in St. Michaels and finish with a tour of the Hooper Strait Lighthouse and Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Our final night and farewell dinner will be at our hotel back near the Washington, DC airports.
