Tour of Southwest England
Eddystone and the Isles of Scilly
Lighthouses, Fish & Chips and Devon Cream!
Wednesday, September 5 - Friday, September 21 2012

The towns and cities of Southwest England mix fascinating history with an interesting coastal landscape including many islands and of course fantastic lighthouses! The U.S. Lighthouse Society journey begins in Bristol where we will travel to see our first set of lighthouses in Gloucester in addition to visiting other ancient cities including Bath which was first established in 43 AD and now is a World Heritage Site known for its Roman thermal spas. As we head down the Southwest coast we will visit the Isle of Lundy which is a granite outcrop rising 400 feet above sea level - a place of outstanding natural beauty with tremendous views of England, Wales and the Atlantic. Ending up at Lands End Cornwall, we will experience the famous city of Penzance and St. Michael’s Mount. From Lands End, the tour will proceed across a small portion of the Atlantic to a small archipelago of islands called the Isles of Scilly which is home to an interesting array of lighthouses we will have the opportunity to see and photograph. Heading East along the South coast of England through Devon we will end up in Plymouth where the group will be whisked away via special charter to photograph up close one of the world’s most famous lighthouses - the Eddystone Light, which stands on a treacherous group of rocks some fourteen miles out to sea. As the trip winds down, we will head to other historic landmarks including Exeter Cathedral, Glastonbury Abbey and the Neolithic Avebury Circle. So come and spend some time “on the high stool” and enjoy a pint with your Society friends while touring this wonderful region of the UK and photographing its lighthouses and many other wonders.
